The Challenger II is the British Army’s modern Main Battle Tank. Having distinguished itself in the Gulf War, the Challenger II remains the apex of British tank technology. Reliable, powerful, and well armored, the Challenger II is reputed as a “tank that wasn’t made to win competitions, but to win wars”.

My personal average total score of Henglong 1 / 16 Challenger II British MBT: 90 (out of 100)
      The Challenger II of Henglong is full of the glory of the barrel, which truly represents the most terrible modern tank in Britain! Read the following to see how I can achieve this level when evaluating the upgrade version of this tank. “Upgrade” means that it is plastic on the outside and its internal gear is steel. Please note that in the position shown, the metal rail represents a “professional” version, which includes more external metal parts, which are expensive.

Function:
The tank is equipped with the latest tk6.0 mfcb (multifunction control board), which has the following features:
1) Proportional acceleration, steering, turret rotation and lance up / down
2) Programmable radio settings, adjustable recoil, sensitivity in turn, overall sensitivity in acceleration, etc
3) Smoke (on / off)
4) Volume (5 settings, including off)
5) Four different sound settings. Each sound set contains a unique engine start sound, idle sound, acceleration sound, lateral sound, lift sound, machine gun, cannon and stop sound.
6) Track recoil force (low, medium and high settings) – the most realistic is low or medium.
7) Launch 6mm plastic BB
8) The tank is not used as a visible part of the battle IR system to simulate the launch of one of the other tanks.

Scale fidelity:
The Challenger II is one of the latest production tanks, shown by Hang Lung in 1 / 16 scale RC. The overall lines of the tank are accurate, and there is no obvious problem with the proportion. As a large chariot in real life, the 1 / 16 Challenger II of Heng Long is the longest chariot provided by Heng Long. Two sets of decals are included to depict the exact marking of real units in service.

What’s in the box:
As an RTR or “ready to run” RC model, all items are included in the box, except for the six AA batteries of the radio transmitter. In areas where liquid transport is restricted, there is no glycerin for the “smoking effect,” but can be found in hardware stores or convenience stores that sell glycerin oil.
Radio, water tank, cosmetic accessories, water tank battery, water tank battery charger and plastic BB do not need any “assembly”, except for the installation of the above “cosmetic accessories”.

Initial two minute functional test:
     Since the water tank is fully functional and does not require the operation of cosmetic accessories, I suggest that the basic functions of the water tank should be tested immediately after unpacking and before the cosmetic accessories are installed. If there happens to be any problem, it is best to report it to motion RC for warranty support before connecting any trim on the tank to the tank.
     For the first two minutes of the test, insert the six AA batteries into the radio and turn them on. Insert the 2S battery supplied with the tank and slide the switch of the tank to “on”. The radio and the tank are already “tied” to each other through a 2.4GHz signal, so just press the button on the radio and the tank will start. Move the controls for all tanks in all directions to evaluate their functionality. For all controls, see the manual. Please note that turrets and cannon shells make a “hoarse” sound when they reach their maximum point of travel. This sound is normal and warns you to stop moving in that direction. It is important that the tank is not allowed to run for more than two minutes during this initial test, as the tank only needs to be paid once.
    After confirming that the water tank is working properly, insert the battery into the attached wall charger. When charging, please pay attention to the installation of “cosmetic accessories” described in the “details” section below. Installing cosmetic components on the outside of the water tank gives the final result: appearance quality:

The tank is mainly made of ABS plastic and molded. There are several small depressions, but they are almost invisible. Considering its price, the tank assembly and finishing are first-class, I think this is a very good price. This version of the Challenger II is factory applied with a full shade and factory applied shading. The weight of shadow in different areas of water tank is different, which leads to the appearance of shadow is good and inconsistent. Some people may prefer the unshaded version, but as far as I’m concerned, I plan to eventually use factory shadows as a pre shadow basis for custom AIRBRUSH PAINT operations. Details:

Several plastic parts are provided for the modeler to install on the tank. These are inserted into pre drilled holes and are almost “snap fit.”. Some of the parts were loose, so I glued them with ABS. But otherwise, I prefer to keep the parts unglued so that they can be easily removed or replaced in the future. It took me about 45 minutes to install plastic “accessories” from smoke bomb launchers, 7.62mm mg, fuel drums, streamers, shackles and other various surface components. I hope there’s more, but the look of the real Challenger II is quite simple, so there’s not much work to do. The engine deck of the tank is very detailed and pre painted as shown below. Some touch up paint can be used for smoke bomb launchers and also for the bottom of the fire extinguisher.

     Tank to RTR with radio, tank, accessories, tank battery, tank battery charger and plastic BB. Depending on the local transportation restrictions in your area, glycerin for smokers may not be included, but the price is enough to purchase locally. The main thing you need to do when you use it out of the box is to use 6 AA batteries.
     The tank itself is assembled and can be run within minutes of opening the box and inserting the battery.
     After all the functions have been verified, insert the battery of the water tank into the charger as it only carries the storage charge.
    Please attach plastic cosmetic parts or “accessories” on the website when charging the water tank battery. As mentioned, it took me about 45 minutes to complete.
    Use the clear chart in the instruction manual and apply decals to a clean, dry surface as required. These are simple Vinyl Decals. They’re not water skiing stickers. After finishing, you may need to seal it with a transparent coat. I didn’t. The decals continued to stick well on the surface. For tips on how to install the decal on the fire extinguisher mounted on the front ice cover, see the “building video.”. I chose to paint the bottom of the fire extinguisher red instead of using the attached red circle decal.
     By the time you have completed the detailed design of the tank with the part gate and decal, the tank battery should be fully charged and you are ready for the first full load operation.

Pre driving checklist
   After completing the detailed description of the filling and decal of the fuel tank, the battery of the tank should be fully charged and now it is ready for the first full test!
   Re insert the battery into the battery slot under the water tank. I like the Henglong designed screw to keep it connected to the battery door at all times, so that the small screw will not be lost. The 2S battery uses the Tamiya type connector as the main power supply, and also has the traditional three wire balanced plug. I found it easy to check the battery voltage with a battery voltage checker, just like using a large aircraft battery. When the battery runs out, Hang Lung’s system will shut down automatically,

     If you plan to use the attached IR system to fight a friend, insert the IR apple and find its magnetic anchor in front of the hatch. Henglong’s magnet is hidden inside the turret, so there is no unsightly mounting base visible from the outside of the turret. Infrared apples are short and sensitive to cloudy conditions of about 10-15 meters. However, since the upper surface of the Challenger II turret is roughly flat and tidy, its IR Macintosh is more eye-catching than other Henglong tanks.

      Please note that both the metal suspension arm and the metal idler frame have adjustable idlers. This makes it very easy to adjust to relax or tighten the track to best suit your driving style and terrain conditions. Challenger II and T-72 are the tanks that Hang Lung recently launched with this mechanism. Although it is not a daily use element, it is still good if / when necessary, and it is simpler than adding or deleting track links to adjust the overall track tension, as required by M1A2 Abrams, Panther g and other models, T-90 and tiger king

Operational tank:    
    It’s easy to learn to drive a Henglong tank. The right lever controls the forward and backward of the accelerator pedal and the left and right travel. The left joystick controls the turret rotation (left and right movement) and the main gun up / down (up / down). The trick is to synchronize your movements so that the tank actually moves and aims the gun as the tank moves in different directions. All the turrets of the Henglong tank can cross 320 degrees, and the barrel can be raised and lowered by about 20 degrees. When you hear the “hoarse” sound, the movement has reached the maximum limit, you must stop pushing the control lever in this direction. Perhaps in the future, Hang Lung will be able to implement limit switches.
     For information on how to shoot machine guns, master gun sequence, load 6mm BB and conduct IR combat, please refer to the manual. TK6 also allows the user to program a series of functions by pressing a key combination and moving one or two levers. The amount of recoil can be adjusted up or down, the maximum speed can be set to two limits, the sensitivity of forward and reverse rotation and other actions can be programmed in a few seconds. Turning forward was too fast to my liking, similar to an RC truck, so I reduced the turning speed to make it turn slower and react more like a real tank to the input. The pilot of RC aircraft will recognize this function as adding “Expo” or “exponential”. Henglong has incorporated it into the latest generation of TK6 mfcb.
    The upgraded version of motion RC does not use zinc alloy gears as it did in the past. On the contrary, since 11 / 2019, all of motion RC’s upgraded tanks include steel gears, which are superior in all respects to the old zinc alloy gears. Although the rest of the travel mechanism of the tank is made of ABS plastic, I prefer the upgraded version because the steel gears in the gearbox are very durable, while the plastic tracks make the tank light and easy to operate. Challenger II is already such a big chariot. It’s very light and has no extended metal parts. The professional version replaces metal tracks with plastic tracks, driving sprockets and idlers. This almost doubles the weight of the tank and also increases the cost, so I suggest that professional tankers don’t have to worry about short driving times or having to buy a few spare batteries. The durability and weight sense of the pro version will appeal to those who want to weigh more than all other considerations.
     Challenger II’s upgraded configuration can climb comfortably at 35 degrees, but begin to slide near 45 degrees. Like other upgraded tanks, plastic tracks hold most of the surface well, although sometimes it spins on tile floors.
    Inside, the sound is very loud, the LED headlights are bright, and the smoke is easy to see. Outside, sound is still easy to hear, and LEDs can be seen in daylight, but smoke is hard to see. It’s the same, because real tanks don’t smoke as much as they do when they set fire, so I don’t mind reducing the amount of visible light in the sun. Challenger II has two vents, like a real fuel tank, which are easily accessible under a plastic grille. This makes it easy to replenish them.

“Send!” Fire the cannon
    Firing the machine gun by pressing the marked button triggers the sound of the machine gun, and a bright LED indicator light is emitted at the bottom of the coaxial mounting base of the turret next to the main gun. Press and hold the cannon button and the machine gun button to fire the main gun, which produces the cannon firing sound, the caterpillar recoil force and the 6 mm BB bullet, which can fly 30 feet from the tank. Everything is well synchronized, so the overall effect is convincing. I tend to use the lowest or middle setting for rebound because I think the highest setting is exaggerated and impractical. I appreciate the need to press and hold the two buttons to fire the main gun, as this prevents accidental firing of a 6mm BB. BB will not be injured, but they are still projectiles, so all precautions should be taken to ensure safety. I usually don’t load any BBS, and after making about 100 photos on the attached target paper, I taped it to the BB loading hole in the hatch so that there was no risk of further BB firing from the main gun. Another method is to disconnect the plug from the mfcb.

      Of all the Henglong chariots I’ve used recently, the most enjoyable thing is to fight IR with other chariots equipped with the same TK6 mfcb. Whether BB is loaded or not, the main gun will always trigger the sound of the gun and the recoil of the orbit, and will always trigger the IR (infrared) launcher hidden in the shell, facing forward. The invisible beam from the infrared transmitter is detected by the infrared mast of any other tank equipped with TK6 or tank equipped with Tanaka IR combat system. The mast is magnetically attached to the turret and receives “impact” from other vehicles. A recorded hit will cause the tank to shiver for a second. After five hits, the tank will play “blast and burn” and then shut down for five seconds. You can continue to fight with your friends before it starts automatically. Having four or five tanks in the backyard is fun! When maneuvering and fishing, avoid shooting while shouting at your friends and become very competitive. Compared with the lower profile of the T-90, the Challenger II’s higher profile does make it vulnerable to incoming flames, as shown in the figure below. Note the relative height of its IR apple.

     Like all other Henglong TK6 tanks, I found the sensitivity of the Challenger II’s infrared transmitter to be acceptable in dark conditions (about 10-15 meters). Under optimal conditions, a hit rate of 25 meters or more can be recorded, but in my experience, this is rare. In local RC combat vehicles, the target range is often much shorter. It should also be noted that infrared technology is vulnerable to degradation in direct sunlight, which is why infrared combat vehicles often use sun blinds on infrared receivers (“apple”). Infrared receivers can also be obscured by obstacles, even on turrets. Moreover, it seems that rotating the turret while recording hits may produce inconsistent results, so this is not a perfect science. Simulate fire in real life?

Power and handling
     Challenger II moves at full throttle walking speed in the high setting and 25% slower in the low setting. Press and hold g and move the left rocker up or down to select the high or low settings, respectively. With proportional steering control, you can actually slow down what looks like a very large “crawl” operation. This is the highlight of the TK6 mfcb, which provides excellent proportional control of all objects moving on the tank. Older versions only cycle their cannon barrel up / down, but now with the TK6 version, I can raise or lower the gun at any time along its path and operate quickly or slowly based on my stick input. For this and other reasons, I think Hang Lung’s mfcb has been completely out of date in the past decade, and this new mfcb is their way of the future. I can’t

Upgrade approach and “detachability” – how easy is it to repair, maintain and upgrade this tank? : 
     Speaking of the TK6 mfcb, I’m glad to see that it has several unused ports. There is a stop light port and a turn signal port. There is even a “main barrel led” port that flashes in sync with the gunfire. If you can insert an LED into the barrel and cancel the BB firing function of the air gun, you can perform a clean simulated “flash” at the top of the barrel within a few minutes each time you fire the main gun.
     In terms of the overall ease of operation of Challenger II, I scored 10 percent because of its very large hull and turret. This makes it easy to get into the interior of the tank, for example, there is a lot of room to add larger speakers, or to implement rebound cartridges or other DIY upgrades.
     As mentioned earlier, my Challenger II is an “upgraded” version, which means that its external parts are plastic, while the gears in the gearbox are steel. I found this to be the best balance between cost, drivability and weight. The more expensive “professional” version has metal tracks, idlers and drive sprockets. The added weight provides better durability under certain conditions, which of course feels more tank like (i.e., bricks), but the cost of achieving this weight gain is to shorten the driving time. For heavy professional users, it is recommended to purchase spare batteries. The pro II version of the wheel seems to be a waste of heavy metal wheels.

matters needing attention:
1) The plastic BB in all Henglong’s chariots is not the best. Their instruction manual recommends visual classification of BBS and removal of all deformed, flat, broken or rectangular BBS. Almost 8% of my Challenger II BB bags are disposable. Nevertheless, at least 70 BBS are smooth and spherical enough.
2) Don’t water smokers. There’s a smoker in the tank and there’s two exhaust pipes. In fact, these pipes can serve as both the exhaust of smoke and the inlet of smoke oil, so you have to put a drop in each pipe every hour you smoke. Less is more! If you let the pipe overflow, smoke will not be able to escape, causing the smoker’s machine to block and die.
3) Please read our article “do and don’t make RC tanks” at * here * and watch the accompanying video * here * for all relevant tips, tips and warnings related to any RC tank. Most importantly, don’t try to push the tank to a bigger obstacle than the actual tank at a ratio of 1 / 16. These tanks are not large-scale crawler trucks, so don’t expect them to climb over rocks and boulders higher than the tank’s ground clearance, which is usually about an inch below the hull. Also, do not attempt to drive in water or mud. RC tanks are not suitable for use in wet or muddy environments in their original state. Extensive waterproofing and cleaning is only the beginning of the upgrade work, so that this operation can be repeated without irreparable damage.

To be fair, my ratings are based on Challenger II’s own price points and target audience, who are entry-level and intermediate level RC Tank enthusiasts who want to get started in the $150 – $200 RTR range. initial quality: 94 / 100
   My Challenger II is in ideal condition and is safely packaged. The ABS II is mainly made of plastic like challenger. The “upgraded” version I have is mostly plastic with metal suspension arms and adjustable idler gear mechanism on the outside, while the metal gearbox inside the tank uses steel gears.
   The paint work in the factory is carried out evenly, with dense shadows but not excessive glare.
   Although it is a large hull with long hull and high sidewall, the lower hull and upper hull do not show obvious bending. I think the temporary refuelling opportunity agrees that, under reasonable conditions, there is no need to use land out of the box to strengthen the Challenger II hull. Inside, the steel gears are well lubricated. I did notice that some of the grease residue began to build up in a line and was thrown away by the centrifugal force of the rotating gear.

User friendliness and portability: 88 / 100  
    The convenience of Hang Lung RTR kit really makes it easy to get started in the world of RC fuel tanks. In this sense, all of Hang Lung’s tanks have done well in reducing the cost of entering this hobby area, and I think many scale enthusiasts will like weighing tanks, just like airplanes, cars, trucks or boats. The radio attached to hang lung can do this without being too flashy. I prefer to use this basic radio with an overall package that is cheaper than a radio with ultra-low delay, 1km range and Hall effect sensing. It’s not a jet. It’s 100 miles an hour at 1000 feet. While other manufacturers dominate markets of higher size and higher functionality, prices are often prohibitive.
    Like Henglong’s other 1 / 16 “Big Five” tanks (Abrams, leopard 2A6, T99, King Tiger), Challenger II’s large size is an advantage, because it is a responsibility. Its long barrel is easy to hit my car door and so on, so be careful when carrying it with you. The machine gun at the top of the turret is best removed during transportation because it is so exposed.
    Despite the light upgrade, Challenger II weighs more than six pounds. The professional version with metal wheels and tracks weighs about 11 pounds! As a result, those who want a lightweight, easy to transport tank may need to look elsewhere.
    Perhaps the most humanized element of Challenger II is its adjustable idler mechanism. Easy to access, easy to adjust (if necessary).

Mobility and driving experience 90 / 100  
    Although the Challenger II is large in size, it has excellent mobility due to its low ground pressure due to its large area of track contact with the ground. In fact, plastic tracks have enough bite force on short grass and accumulated dirt or loose gravel surfaces. However, due to speed, I sometimes force the tank tracks to slide on smooth surfaces such as cement, tile or wood floors.
    However, if the user attempts to perform a fast “super rotation” operation, due to the outer edge of the track shoe, the above inherent deflection of the plastic track found in the original version, the upgraded version and the Upgrade-A version is easy to jump. It can be drilled into soft surfaces and solved gradually. However, at scale control speed, the plastic track can work perfectly. This is a tank, not a drift car.
    I prefer Challenger II’s third sound setting. Out of the box, it’s programmed as a second sound set. Press the G and K buttons at the same time to switch between different sound sets.

Durability 87 / 100 
    Metal suspension arms and an almost flat bottom hull have high long-term durability. I found that Challenger II did not get stuck in many obstacles, and although the cantilever was in a vulnerable position when driving through the rubble, there were no deep marks in the cantilever or the raised protected area. Unlike the early staggered hubs of King Tiger, Panther g or tiger I, the hub layout also resists debris.
     However, I still recommend the use of ABS adhesive to adhere the towing hooks of the front lower hull, the shackles and the towing hooks of the rear lower hull, because they are easy to break if there is an obstacle higher than 38 mm above the ground clearance. Depending on the way you carry Challenger II, it’s also a good idea to attach the rear fuel tank to the hull.
     Customers who want to increase the stiffness and durability of metal tracks, metal idlers and metal drive sprockets should consider purchasing a more expensive “professional” version, as shown in the figure below. Please note that metal parts are easy to identify because there is no paint out of the box.

Scale fidelity 90 / 100    
    Several plastic parts are provided for the modeler to install on the water tank to enhance the appearance of the overall scale. These are inserted into pre drilled holes and are almost “snap fit.”. Some of the parts were loose, so I glued them with ABS. However, otherwise, I hope that the parts will not be detached so that they can be easily removed or replaced when needed in the future. From start to finish, it takes about 45-50 minutes to install plastic “accessories” in the front turret area, including fuel tanks, fire extinguishers, grenade launchers, rear-view mirrors and many grippers. If you want to take the time to cut parts out of a plastic gate, plan for an hour. I recommend a sharp push shear designed for this purpose because it makes cleaning much easier.
    At this price point, some detail areas are bound to be softened and can be used for mass production of RC tanks, but overall, this 1 / 16 Challenger II looks good in almost any way. It feels like a powerful machine, which means doing bad to bad people

Possibility of easy maintenance and upgrade 94 / 100  
    Not surprisingly, Challenger II is easy to maintain and provides plenty of space inside the hull. Drivers who want to upgrade to larger loudspeakers or design an in-car charging system are better off using spacious water tanks like the Challenger II rather than smaller ones with a shell. Challenger II can provide spindle bearing housing upgrades, but it is not easy to install until we change the assembly process in the factory.
     Another “upgrade” worth paying for would be Tamiya’s 1 / 16 German tank crew, the closest I could find to Challenger II. I used the graphics shown below on Leopard 2A6, but with repainting and some adjustments, I think they can make an appropriate substitution on the Challenger II model. Hope someone can design a 3DP file for graphic printing or resin casting in the future.

Total value (cost, size, performance, quality) 90 / 100
    Overall, Challenger II is good. It’s the only British chariot in Hang Lung’s current portfolio, although I’m looking forward to that day changing. As a modern MBT currently in use, Hang Lung’s 1 / 16 model provides RC tankers with a living and legendary opportunity. If you don’t mind its large size and bulky proportions, and want to use a modern chariot less common than the T-90 or Abrams in your next club event, Challenger II is worth considering.
