BRADLEY M2A2 IFV ODS
Tracked armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle – United States
The M2A2 Bradley AIFV (Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle) was introduced in the U.S. Army in 1988. It is an improved version of the standard vehicle Bradley M2A1. The improvements include the following: enhanced vehicle survivability by restoring ammunition; internal armor protection of key components; spall liners and mounting provisions for improved vehicle smoke screening; additional armor protection including additional armor for the hull and turret; a ballistic shroud provided for the commander’s back-up sight; and improved drive train and suspension. The U.S. Army also upgraded the earlier M2A1s to the M2A2 standard. After Operation Desert Storm (First Gulf War in 1991), the M2A2 was upgraded again with the addition of an eye-safe carbon dioxide laser rangefinder, global positioning system and compass, combat identification system, and thermal viewer for the driver. The 1,423 M2A2 Bradleys brought up to this standard were referred to as M2A2 ODS (Operation Desert Storm). In August 2018, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) received the fourth and final batch of eight M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) as a part of the U.S. military aid program to Lebanon. In December 2019, the U.S. Government announced a plan to donate almost 60 Bradley M2A2 Infantry Fighting Vehicles in ODS (Operation Desert Storm) configuration to Croatia, according to a statement issued by Croatian Defense Minister Damir Krsticevic, Kamenjar.com reports. In June 2020, it was released that Greece would receive Bradley M2A2 from the United States. A Foreign Military Sales announced on December 1, 2020, indicated that the State Department had made a determination to approve a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Croatia of refurbishment/modernization and support for 76 M2A2 Operation Desert Storm (ODS) Bradley Fighting vehicles and related equipment for an estimated cost of $757 million. On March 12, 2023, the United States approved the transfer of 300 M2A2 Bradley IFVs to Greece. According to pictures published on Social Networks on April 17, 2023, the Bradley M2A2 IFVs donated by the United States to Ukraine are now on combat duty. On June 13, 2023, the U.S. DoD (Department of Defense) announced the delivery of more Bradley M2A2 IFVs to Ukraine.

The M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle was designed to counter the threat posed by the BMP-1
In 1972 the US Army requested design proposal to meet a requirement for a mechanized Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). It was developed in response to the Soviet BMP-1 IFV. A complex series of design submissions and changing specifications followed until a Fighting Vehicle System appeared, comprising two vehicles, an IFV which became M2 Bradley and Cavalry Fighting Vehicle which became the M3. It was designed as a better armored replacement for the ageing M113 armored personnel carrier. Deliveries of the M2 Bradley commenced in 1981 and have continued since with totals over 4 600 vehicles. Some 400 M2 IFV’s have been exported to Saudi Arabia. In 2017 a total of 32 M2A2s were delivered to Libya. In 2019 agreement was made to deliver 84 M2A2 ODS armored vehicles to Croatia. Later this number was increased to 89 vehicles. In 2020 it was announced that 350 M2A2s will be delivered to Greece. Upgraded M2 Bradley IFVs are scheduled to remain in active service with the US military until at least 2029 and beyond. There are no immediate plans to replace this vehicle with a next-generation IFV. In 2023 it was announced that United States will deliver 100 Bradley IFVs to Ukraine in order to defend against the Russian invasion.
Main role of the M2 was to provide protected transport for infantry squad into close contact with the enemy. It offered a significantly higher level of protection for the dismounts than the M113 armored personnel carrier.
The M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle has a welded aluminum armor hull. Front arc has a spaced laminated aluminum and steel armor construction. Initial variant (M2A0) provided protection against 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds over the front ark. All-round protection was likely to be against 7.62 mm to 12.7 mm rounds and artillery shell splinters. Eventually protection level was increased on upgraded models. Upgraded vehicles are also fitted with explosive reactive armor blocks, that withstands hits from RPG rounds. The M2 Bradley is also fitted with NBC protection system.
Vehicle is armed with a two-man turret, fitted with a 25 mm dual-fed Bushmaster chain gun. At the time of its introduction the Bradley was the first IFV with a fully-stabilized main gun. The gun fires both armor-piercing and high explosive rounds. There is a TOW anti-tank guided missile launcher loaded with two missiles. There is also a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. Interestingly during the US military actions in Iraq, since 2003 until 2011, the Bradley series armored vehicles destroyed more Iranian armored vehicles than Abrams main battle tanks.
The original Bradley IFV accommodated 6 dismounts. There was a rear power-operated ramp with integral doors for entry and exit. Early models of the M2 Bradley had firing ports with dedicated 5.56 mm assault rifles attached. These firing ports were removed on upgraded models in order to increase protection of the side armor.
Original version of this infantry fighting vehicle was powered by a Cummins VTA-903-T500 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 500 hp. Engine is located at the front. It is mated to an automatic transmission. The M2 is amphibious with the use of swim barrier. Swimming capabilities can be improved by the erection of inflatable buoyancy tanks. On water the Bradley is propelled by spinning its tracks.
This IFV is air-transportable.
Throughout its service life the M2 Bradley IFV series has been the subject of numerous enhancements to improve combat capabilities and survivability for the vehicle and dismounts. Over the years there were four mayor improvement programmes. Operational vehicles were upgraded to the M2A1, M2A2, M2A3 and M2A4 standards. There were also some not that significant upgrade programs when some vehicles received certain upgrades.

M2 Bradley Vehicles Demonstrate Combat Power
M2 Bradley crews fire the 25 mm M242 Chain Gun and Tube-launched Optically-tracked Wire-guided (TOW) missiles from their Bradley Fighting Vehicles on simulated objectives during live-fire exercises.
The crews conduct training maneuvers, demonstrate combat power and proficiency.
The trainings was conducted to assess operational effectiveness.
The M2 Bradley, or Bradley IFV, is an American infantry fighting vehicle that is a member of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle family. It is manufactured by BAE Systems Land & Armaments, which was formerly United Defense.
The Bradley is designed for reconnaissance and to transport a squad of infantry, providing them protection from small arms fire, while also providing firepower to both suppress and eliminate most threats to friendly infantry. It is designed to be highly maneuverable and to be fast enough to keep up with heavy armor during an advance. The M2 holds a crew of three: a commander, a gunner and a driver, as well as six fully equipped soldiers.
The total cost of the program is $5,664,100,000, and the average unit costs $3,166,000.
Finally US Army Reveal Bradley M2 Replacement
Finally US Army Reveal Bradley M2 Replacement. The M2 Bradley has been a workhorse of an infantry fighting vehicle for the US Army since the 1980s but over 40 years later it’s time for a change. Enter the XM-30, the next generation of IFV that promises to take thousands of troops to the battlefield in the next generation of warfare. As of this year, the companies behind the project have been given the green light to continue with the development phase of the XM-30 project, so it won’t be long before we see these fighting transporters in action. Let’s have a look at the project so far.
How powerful is M2 Bradley?
In fact, the Bradley already has a track record of winning shootouts with full-sized Russian tanks. Production for the Bradley began in 1981, when it replaced the M113 armored personnel carrier, greatly exceeding the M113’s speed and power. The Bradley has been a staple of the Army’s armored troop-carrying capability since its introduction to the battlefield during Operation Desert Storm, losing only 3 of the 2,200 that were deployed.
